When Stalingrad machine-building institute was set up in 1930 the machine-building faculty was also founded. History of the faculty reflects all major periods of economical development of the country, that's why for all the years of its existence the faculty has been given different names: constructional, tank, artillery, mechanical, automotive-tractor.
A list of specialties for preparing engineers at the faculty and a list of chairs were changed depending on tasks given to the faculty. There were the following chairs: "Automobile and tractor building", "Automotive engines", " Automatic plants", Machine parts", "Theoretical mechanics".
Besides training highly qualified specialists chairs also conduct scientific researches for accomplishment of present and prospective industrial tasks, set up scientific schools, develop fundamental problems in the field of land transport systems.
Nowadays the staff of the faculty consists of 56 teachers; there are 13 doctors of science and professors among of them. More than 90% of teachers have academic degree and status, more than 30 postgraduate students and 3 doctoral students study under the leadership of eleven supervisors of studies.
Large scientific areas are headed by professors, doctors of technology: in the area of engine building Y.A. Grigoryev, V.M. Slavutskiy, A.V. Vasilyev, in the area of tractor building V.P. Shevchuk, A.V. Pobedin, in the area of laser technologies and wear resisting coatings for enlargement of resource of the machine high-loaded parts Y.I.Tesker, in the area of reliability of complex technical systems of special machine building V.M. Truhanov, in the area of resistance and safe exploitation of machines' parts A.A. Baron and M.M. Matlin, in the area of dynamics and control of walking machines' movements Y.S. Briskin and V.V. Zhoga.
The chairs of the faculty conduct research works for large industrial plants of Volgograd and works on some important russian and international programs, carry out certification of automobile and tractor spare parts.
Since 1984 Automotive-tractor faculty has been headed by an associate professor of the chair of automotive-tractor engines Kosov Oleg Dmitrievich. Deputy dean is an associate professor of the chair "Automatic plants" Karlov Vitaliy Ivanovich.
